Seasonal Ban Lifted: What’s Next for Grouper and Coral Trout?

The Ministry of Fisheries and Forests has officially lifted the seasonal ban on Grouper and Coral trout, also known as Kawakawa and Donu, which concluded on September 30.

Grouper and Coral trout play a crucial role in coastal marine ecosystems and are highly prized for their nutritional and economic value.

The prohibition was initially implemented to safeguard these species during their spawning season, aiming to prevent overfishing that could lead to declines in their population and ultimately threaten the fishery’s sustainability.

Alitia Bainivalu, the Minister Responsible, expressed gratitude to the Fijian community for their support during the ban, which lasted from June 1 to September 30.

Bainivalu encouraged the public to maintain collaborative efforts in sustaining, managing, and protecting the nation’s fisheries and ocean resources. She emphasized the importance of responsible and sustainable fishing practices now that the ban has been lifted.
