Search for Justice: Outrage After Alleged Domestic Violence Tragedy in Fiji

Police are searching for a man suspected of causing the death of his partner yesterday. The woman suffered fatal injuries reportedly inflicted by the suspect, who remains at large as of last night.

The couple is thought to have lived in a rented residence on Albert Lee Place, near Nailuva Road in Suva. The incident was brought to light by another member of their household, who alerted her partner, leading to a police report.

Authorities confirmed they are conducting an investigation, and a post-mortem examination will establish the exact cause of death.

The Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection expressed its sorrow and anger over this tragic event in a statement released last night. The ministry called for immediate justice for the victim and urged all sectors of society to act promptly to prevent future violence.

“We stand in solidarity with the victim’s family and all those affected by this horrific act,” the statement read. It noted that this incident occurred just five months after another woman was killed in a similar manner in April.

Violence against women and girls remains a significant issue in Fiji, with nearly two out of three women experiencing physical or sexual violence in their lives. The ministry emphasized that this must come to an end.

“We urge every individual, family, and community to join together to combat violence against women and girls. Each Fijian has a role in ensuring our homes and communities are safe and respectful environments for all women and girls.”

Minister Lynda Tabuya described the situation as unacceptable and heartbreaking, assuring women and girls they are not alone. She encouraged those in need to seek help through the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre, the National Domestic Violence Helpline (1560), and the Child Helpline (1325), reaffirming their commitment to fighting for justice.

The Fiji National Action Plan to Prevent Violence Against All Women and Girls (Fiji NAP PVAWG), initiated in June 2023, serves as a critical framework for addressing this crisis.
