Schools on High Alert: Rising Break-Ins Prompt Security Warning

Police in Labasa have issued a warning to school administrations, advising them to refrain from keeping large amounts of cash on their premises. This alert follows a recent surge in break-ins targeting both primary and secondary schools in the region.

Authorities are encouraging educational institutions to adopt enhanced security measures to mitigate the risk of further incidents. Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the Northern division, reported a noticeable increase in school break-ins over the past month. These break-ins have occurred in canteens, classrooms, and various offices throughout the schools.

According to reports, the first incident took place between August 5 and 6 when someone forced entry into a secondary school in Labasa Town, accessing the canteen and stealing both cash and various items. Another incident involved a primary school located outside Labasa Town where, between August 8 and 9, an intruder broke into the main office and stole cash.

A similar event occurred between August 9 and 11 at a well-known college in Labasa when someone forced open the principal’s office door and took money. Another break-in was reported between August 14 and 15 at a primary and secondary school on the same property, resulting in the theft of cash and assorted goods. The most recent incident, occurring between August 16 and 17, involved a theft at a primary school in Labasa Town where various snacks and cash were taken.

With the school holidays approaching, SSP Baledrokadroka highlighted the need for schools to properly secure their properties. He urged teachers and school management to collaborate and ensure that a security watchman is present at all times, stressing that security measures should always be in effect.
