Schools on Alert: Rising Break-ins Threaten Security in Labasa

Police have alerted school administrators in Labasa to refrain from keeping large amounts of cash on school grounds. This warning comes as a result of a noticeable rise in break-ins targeting both primary and secondary schools in the region.

Authorities are encouraging schools to adopt more stringent security protocols to avert additional incidents. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander (DPC) for the Northern Division, reported an increase in break-ins at schools this month.

The break-ins have occurred in various locations, including canteens, classrooms, and administrative offices. Police are calling on educational institutions to enhance their security measures to protect their facilities and belongings.

Incident reports reveal that the first break-in occurred between August 5 and 6 at a secondary school in Labasa Town, where an intruder forced open the main entrance, accessed the canteen, and stole cash along with other items.

The second reported incident took place at a primary school outside Labasa Town between August 8 and 9, where someone unlawfully entered the main office and took cash.

Another similar incident happened between August 9 and 11 at a well-known college in Labasa, where an individual breached the principal’s office and made away with cash.

A subsequent break-in occurred between August 14 and 15 at a school complex that serves both primary and secondary students, resulting in the theft of cash and various items, including snacks.

The latest incident transpired between August 16 and 17 at a primary school in Labasa Town, where assorted snacks, items, and cash were stolen.

As the school holidays approach, SSP Baledrokadroka stressed the importance of securing school properties effectively. He stated that teachers and school administrators must collaborate to ensure a watchman is present at all times and that security measures are consistently enforced.
