Schools on Alert: Rising Break-Ins Prompt Security Warning

Police have issued a warning to school administrators in Labasa, urging them to refrain from storing large amounts of cash on school grounds. This alert comes in light of a recent spike in break-ins that have targeted both primary and secondary schools in the region. Authorities are advising educational institutions to enhance their security protocols to deter future incidents.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the Northern region, reported an increase in such break-ins this month. These incidents have affected various areas within schools, including canteens, classrooms, and administrative offices. Police emphasize the need for schools to implement measures to protect their facilities and valuables.

According to reports, the first break-in occurred between August 5 and 6, when an intruder forced open the main door of a secondary school in Labasa Town, accessed the canteen, and made off with cash and other items. The second incident took place at a primary school outside Labasa Town between August 8 and 9, where someone broke into the main office and stole cash.

A third similar case occurred between August 9 and 11 at a well-known college in Labasa, where an intruder forced open the principal’s office door and took cash. Another break-in was reported between August 14 and 15 at a combined primary and secondary school, where cash, various items, and snacks were stolen. The most recent incident, occurring between August 16 and 17, involved a primary school in Labasa Town where assorted snacks and cash were taken.

As the school holidays approach, SSP Baledrokadroka stressed the need for proper security measures to safeguard school properties. He urged teachers and school administration to collaborate in ensuring a watchman is available at all times, reiterating that security protocols must remain vigilant at all times.
