Schools on Alert: Rising Break-Ins Prompt Security Warning

Police have warned schools in Labasa to refrain from keeping large amounts of cash on their premises due to a rise in break-ins targeting educational institutions. This advisory follows multiple thefts occurring in both primary and secondary schools in the area.

Authorities are encouraging schools to enhance their security protocols to avoid further incidents. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the Northern division, noted an uptick in break-ins this month, which have taken place in canteens, classrooms, and various school offices.

Baledrokadroka provided details on several reported incidents. The first case involved a burglary at a secondary school in Labasa Town on August 5-6, where an intruder broke through the main door, accessed the canteen, and stole cash and various goods. A second incident occurred at a primary school outside Labasa Town between August 8 and 9, where an assailant broke into the main office and took cash.

A similar break-in happened at a well-known college in Labasa between August 9 and 11, where someone forced open the principal’s office and stole cash. Yet another incident occurred on August 14-15 at a combined primary and secondary school, where the thief made off with cash, various items, and snacks. The most recent burglary took place between August 16 and 17 at a primary school in Labasa Town, involving the theft of assorted snacks and cash.

As the school holidays approach, SSP Baledrokadroka highlighted the need for schools to ensure their properties are securely maintained. He emphasized the importance of having a watchman present at all times and stressed that security measures should be consistently enforced.
