School Security Alert: Rising Break-Ins Prompt Police Warning

Police in Labasa have issued a warning to school administrators, advising them to refrain from keeping large amounts of cash on school grounds. This alert follows a recent surge in break-ins at both primary and secondary schools in the region.

Authorities are urging schools to enhance their security measures to deter future incidents. Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, the Divisional Police Commander for the Northern Division, noted a spike in break-in reports this month.

The break-ins have affected canteens, classrooms, and various administrative offices. Police are emphasizing the need for schools to take proactive steps to protect their facilities and belongings.

Incident reports include a break-in at a secondary school in Labasa Town between August 5 and 6, where an intruder forced open the main door, accessed the canteen, and stole cash and merchandise. Another incident involved a primary school outside Labasa Town on August 8 and 9, where an intruder entered the main office and took cash.

A similar case occurred between August 9 and 11 at a well-known college in Labasa, where the principal’s office was broken into, resulting in cash theft. On August 14 and 15, both a primary and secondary school on the same property experienced a break-in, with cash and various items stolen.

The most recent reported incident took place between August 16 and 17 at a primary school in Labasa Town, where an intruder stole snacks, items, and cash.

As the school holidays approach, SSP Baledrokadroka emphasized the importance of securing school properties effectively. He urged teachers and school management to collaborate in ensuring a watchman is present at all times and to implement security measures consistently.
