Police have warned school administrators in Labasa to refrain from keeping large amounts of cash on school premises following a surge in break-ins at both primary and secondary schools in the region. Authorities are advising schools to strengthen their security protocols to protect their facilities and assets.

Divisional Police Commander for the Northern Division, Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka, reported a notable increase in break-ins at educational institutions this month. These incidents have involved intrusions into canteens, classrooms, and various school offices.

The first recorded break-in occurred between August 5 and 6 at a secondary school in Labasa Town, where an individual forced open the main door, accessed the canteen, and stole cash along with various goods. Another incident took place at a primary school outside Labasa Town between August 8 and 9, where an intruder forcibly entered the main office and made off with cash.

A similar case transpired between August 9 and 11 at a well-known college in Labasa, where the intruder entered the principal’s office after forcing the door and stole cash. Additionally, between August 14 and 15, a combined primary and secondary school experienced theft, with an intruder taking cash, various items, and snacks. The most recent event occurred between August 16 and 17 at a primary school in Labasa Town, where snacks, items, and cash were stolen.

As the school holidays approach, SSP Baledrokadroka underscores the necessity for adequate security measures to be in place. He urged teachers and school management to collaborate in ensuring the presence of a watchman at all times, emphasizing that security measures must be consistently implemented.
