Thirteen students received medical attention at Vunidawa Hospital after an accident occurred yesterday morning in Navuniyasi, Naitasiri. According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations Livai Driu, the driver of the carrier reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road.
Details surrounding the incident are still limited as police continue to investigate what took place. The students involved were en route to their annual examination when the accident happened. Tragically, a cow also perished when the carrier left the road.
The Ministry of Education could not be contacted for a statement regarding the incident. However, questions have been raised about the safety of school children, particularly those in rural areas and on maritime islands, who regularly use carriers for school transportation.
This incident follows a similar accident that occurred in July, when a rural service licence carrier transporting 11 students from Adi Maopa Secondary School lost control and rolled down a hill near Daliconi Village. In that case, six students needed treatment for injuries at Lomaloma Hospital.
Comments on the importance of ensuring safer school transportation could be highlighted, as these incidents underscore the need for improved safety measures for students traveling to and from school in rural regions.
In summary, the alarming trend of accidents involving student transportation raises significant concerns about safety standards and the urgent need for reforms to protect children while they travel to their educational institutions.
