Authorities are investigating four distinct incidents at a well-known school in Tailevu, raising concerns among the community. Assistant Commissioner of Police Crime Mesake Waqa confirmed that the ongoing investigations involve serious allegations, including rape, attempted rape, indecent assault, and serious assault.

As these investigations unfold, there is increasing anxiety about the safety of children in the area. Reports have circulated regarding the concerning influence of drugs among youth, with instances of students allegedly distributing narcotics, including hard drugs such as methamphetamine.

Syringes have been discovered in urban areas, pointing to students’ involvement in the methamphetamine trade. Earlier this year, there were accounts of drug dealers targeting primary school children to sell drugs, prompting discussions about how schools, including those in Nausori, are addressing these challenges.

Fiji National University academic director Matereti Sukanaivalu emphasized the adverse effects of drug-related issues on young people during a panel discussion in May, noting that these problems are increasing in Fiji. He highlighted that students are often susceptible to narcotics and mentioned their frequent visits to kava bars after school.

Statistics released by the Ministry of Education around May 2013 revealed alarming trends, indicating that an average of 63 primary schools in Fiji reported student involvement in drugs, sexual offenses, and substance abuse annually. Between 2009 and 2011 alone, 72 pregnancies were recorded among high school students, along with 215 reported sexual offenses, 54 cases involving marijuana, and a significant number of incidents related to alcohol and kava consumption.

With the confirmation of recent sexual assault incidents at schools, there are growing concerns about societal fragmentation and the alarming participation of students in these criminal activities. This situation raises critical questions about the wellbeing of children, the state of the education system, community dynamics, and family environments.

Addressing these pressing issues requires immediate action and long-term solutions, which should involve collaboration with the education sector, raising awareness about the challenges faced, and establishing support systems for students. It is imperative that children are provided with a safe and healthy environment for their development.
