The Ministry of Education has recognized the significant challenges posed by inadequate school infrastructure, which negatively impacts Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards in schools. Education Minister Aseri Radrodro highlighted a troubling situation at Nabua Primary School, where students are exposed to risky conditions due to defects in the school’s structure.
Minister Radrodro noted that the issues stem from a building project left unfinished by previous management. He expressed that the new management needs to address this and is encouraged to seek government support through the appropriate channels to finalize the school’s construction.
Concerns have been raised about visible deficiencies at Nabua Primary, such as classrooms with corroded roofs and open windows that pose safety risks for students.
In light of these issues, the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Industrial Relations, Agni Deo Singh, confirmed that a site visit occurred on November 4, with a report regarding the OHS conditions set to be released shortly. However, there has been a delay in addressing these concerns, as the ministry has not yet responded despite multiple inquiries.
This situation underscores the urgent need for reform and investment in school infrastructure to ensure students learn in safe environments. With the government acknowledging the problem and the new management showing willingness to collaborate, there is potential for significant improvements in the safety and quality of educational facilities in the future.
In summary, while the current conditions at Nabua Primary School are concerning, the proactive measures being discussed may pave the way for safer and more supportive learning environments.
