The Minister for Housing and Local Government, Maciu Nalumisa, has promised that temporary solutions will be implemented for the teachers and students of Deshbandhu Vitogo Primary School in Lautoka, which was recently impacted by a fire. The incident occurred on Saturday, leading to significant damage, including the destruction of the school’s office, four classrooms, and the computer lab.
Accompanying the Minister on his visit to the school were the Assistant Minister of Education, Iliesa Vanawalu, and Permanent Secretary, Selina Kuruleca, along with other officials. Fortunately, the National Fire Authority was able to protect the library, Early Childhood Education (ECE) classrooms, and toilet facilities.
Nalumisa stated that as part of the temporary measures, ECE students will continue using their existing classrooms, while students in years 3, 4, 7, and 8 will utilize a tent supplied by UNICEF. Additionally, he mentioned that counseling and psychosocial support would be offered to both teachers and students throughout the week.
In the meantime, law enforcement and the National Fire Authority are collaborating to determine the cause of the fire.
