School Break-Ins Spike: Police Urge Enhanced Security Measures

Police have issued a warning to schools in Labasa, advising them against keeping large amounts of money on their premises. This alert comes following a recent rise in break-ins at both primary and secondary schools in the region. Authorities are calling for schools to enhance their security measures to deter any future incidents.

Divisional Police Commander Northern Senior Superintendent of Police Kemueli Baledrokadroka noted a significant increase in break-ins at educational institutions this month. The break-ins have occurred in canteens, classrooms, and various school offices. The police are urging schools to adopt preventative strategies to protect their facilities and assets.

In terms of specific incidents, the first break-in was reported between August 5 and 6, when an individual allegedly forced open the main door of a secondary school in Labasa Town, accessed the canteen, and stole cash along with various items. The second incident involved a primary school outside Labasa Town, where between August 8 and 9, an intruder gained access to the main office and stole cash.

A third similar case occurred between August 9 and 11 at a notable college in Labasa, where someone forced entry into the principal’s office and stole cash. Additionally, another incident was reported between August 14 and 15 at a primary and secondary school situated on the same grounds, involving the theft of cash, assorted items, and snacks. The most recent break-in, which took place between August 16 and 17, involved an intruder entering a primary school in Labasa Town and stealing snacks, items, and cash.

As the school holidays approach, SSP Baledrokadroka stressed the need for proper security of school properties. He emphasized the importance of having a watchman present at all times, stating, “Teachers and school management need to work together to ensure that a watchman is present at all times. Security measures must be in place at all times.”
