The Suva City Council (SCC) has established a new opportunity for its skilled-based employees to enhance their qualifications through a recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pacific Polytech (PP).
SCC’s acting chief executive officer, Tevita Boseiwaqa, stated that this agreement will provide a pathway for staff members to obtain skill-based certificates, particularly benefiting over 200 employees engaged in skill-oriented work.
Boseiwaqa emphasized that the MoU would cater to three-quarters of the staff, reflecting their commitment to a multi-level and multi-skills approach. He noted that SCC plans to perform a training needs analysis to pinpoint specific areas where employees can take advantage of the MoU. This analysis aims to identify needs within the council, ultimately providing staff with broader skill exposure.
“Employees who are multi-skilled have a stronger platform for growth, as opposed to those who are specialized in just one area,” he added.
Peni Taoi, the founding director of Pacific Polytech, welcomed the agreement, highlighting that this MoU adds to similar ones previously established with Labasa and Nasinu Town Councils.
Taoi mentioned that Pacific Polytech focuses on technical skill development and offers upskilling opportunities to capitalize on emerging chances within the community. This marks the third MoU formed with a council by PP, showcasing their commitment to enhancing employee skill sets across different regions.
