The Suva City Council (SCC) has recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pacific Polytech (PP), allowing skilled-based employees to pursue upgrades and obtain certificates in their fields. SCC’s acting chief executive officer, Tevita Boseiwaqa, remarked that this agreement will significantly enhance the qualifications of staff members, with over 200 employees set to benefit.
Boseiwaqa emphasized that the initiative targets approximately three-quarters of their workforce, promoting a multi-level and multi-skilled approach. He indicated that SCC will conduct a training needs analysis to identify specific areas where employees can take full advantage of the MoU. This analysis aims to highlight skill gaps and prepare staff for a broader range of responsibilities.
He pointed out that having a multi-skilled workforce creates a stronger foundation for employee development, allowing staff to grow beyond a single specialization.
Peni Taoi, the founding director of Pacific Polytech, expressed enthusiasm for the MoU, noting that it complements existing agreements with other councils in Labasa and Nasinu, which provide similar benefits to their employees. Taoi highlighted Pacific Polytech’s focus on technical skills and upskilling opportunities that arise within the industry.
