Suva City Council (SCC) employees who work in skilled positions now have the opportunity to enhance their qualifications and obtain skilled-based certificates thanks to a newly signed Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Pacific Polytech (PP).

Tevita Boseiwaqa, the acting CEO of SCC, stated that this agreement will enable staff members to improve their credentials. He noted that more than 200 employees engaged in skill-based roles will benefit from this initiative.

“The majority of our staff perform skill-based work and require these qualifications. Approximately three-quarters of our workforce will be included in this opportunity. Our approach encompasses multi-level and multi-skilled development, making this MoU significant,” Mr. Boseiwaqa explained.

He added that SCC will initiate a training needs analysis to pinpoint specific areas where staff can utilize the MoU effectively. This assessment will help identify staffing needs and ultimately expand their skill sets.

“When employees possess multiple skills, it creates a stronger foundation for their growth, rather than being limited to a singular area of expertise,” he remarked.

Peni Taoi, the founding director of Pacific Polytech, expressed support for the agreement, highlighting that it complements existing MoUs with Labasa and Nasinu Town Councils, which offer similar advantages to their workforce.

“Pacific Polytech specializes in technical education and provides opportunities for upskilling in line with industry demands. This MoU is my third with the council, following agreements with Labasa and Nasinu,” Mr. Taoi stated.
