The Fiji Police Force’s Mpaisa Taskforce has charged two women in separate incidents of financial fraud using the Mpaisa platform. A 23-year-old woman from Rakiraki is accused of unlawfully obtaining $336 from a member of the public on January 31, 2023. Investigations revealed that she received the funds, which were mistakenly transferred to her account, and withdrew the money without rightful claim. This incident was reported to the Valelevu Police Station, leading to her arrest. She remains in police custody and is expected to appear in court at the Sigatoka Magistrate’s Court today.

In another case, a 44-year-old caregiver from Dreketi Feeder Road, Lautoka, is facing similar allegations for obtaining $250 through the Mpaisa platform last January. She reportedly created a Facebook account impersonating her husband, a DJ who offers live streaming services, and collected payments for services that were never provided, without his knowledge. This fraudulent activity was reported at the Nabua Police Station, resulting in her arrest as well. She will also appear in the Lautoka Magistrate’s Court today.
