Scam Season in Fiji: Are You Prepared?

Scammers are constantly adapting their methods to align with global trends, as highlighted by Shaheen Ali, Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, during the launch of the first National Scam Awareness Week.

“In today’s fast-paced digital world, it’s essential to recognize that scams have unfortunately become a common part of our lives,” Mr. Ali stated. He detailed several prevalent scam types in Fiji, such as impersonation scams, fraudulent job offers, and romance scams, which are often fueled by misleading information shared on social media.

“The National Scam Awareness Week serves as an important platform to educate not only young adults but also future generations on how to identify and protect themselves from scams,” he emphasized. To maximize its reach, the campaign will utilize various media channels, including billboards and social media, to enhance public awareness.

Meanwhile, Seema Shandil, CEO of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out the low engagement from consumers during outreach efforts. However, interest in their services tends to spike once individuals fall victim to scams.

“Despite our repeated warnings about potential scams and guidance on how to recognize them, many consumers continue to be complacent,” Ms. Shandil remarked. She noted that despite extensive awareness campaigns, both online and at the grassroots level, individuals often disregard the provided information. Unfortunately, this negligence typically results in consumers seeking assistance only after becoming victims of scams.

Last year, the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam adversely affected 900 Fijians, leading to recorded complaints totaling $1.7 million. “The fallout from such scams is just the start of the issue,” Ms. Shandil said.

On a global scale, online fraud rates have surged, with phishing emails and similar deceptive tactics targeting both individuals and businesses. The Anti-Scam Taskforce has been established to improve coordination among various agencies, raise awareness, and promote protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week. The taskforce’s goals include enhancing public knowledge and launching cooperative educational campaigns, along with advocating for stricter laws and regulations.
