The Fiji Police MPaisa Taskforce has charged a woman in her late 50s for allegedly obtaining financial gain through deceit. The suspect, a resident of Lami, is accused of securing $2,500 from a victim on April 16, 2022.

The police investigation found that the victim was engaged in an online conversation with someone she believed was located overseas, who instructed her to send the money in order to receive a gift. Subsequently, the victim transferred the funds to an individual, who then forwarded the money to the accused.

Further inquiries indicated that the individual who received the funds before passing them to the accused may also have fallen victim to the same scam. After realizing the situation, the victim attempted to reach out to the online contact without success.

The accused has been charged with one count of obtaining financial advantage and is scheduled to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court today.
