A 52-year-old man has been charged by Fiji’s Police Force M-Paisa Taskforce for allegedly obtaining financial gain through deceptive means. The incident took place on September 8, 2023, when the man is accused of fraudulently acquiring $100 from a victim via M-Paisa.
Investigations revealed that the victim had seen a post on Facebook advertising car rentals, which prompted them to pay a deposit to secure a vehicle. After sending the money, attempts to contact the driver were unsuccessful, raising suspicions. The victim subsequently reported the incident to the Consumer Council, which escalated the matter to the Fiji Police Force’s Criminal Investigation Department in Suva.
The accused is expected to appear in court at the Nasinu Magistrates Court later today.
This situation highlights the importance of vigilance against online scams. As the digital landscape continues to grow, consumers must be cautious when engaging in financial transactions online. Awareness and reporting suspicious activities can help authorities take action against fraudulent practices, ensuring a safer environment for everyone.
