Scam Alert: Are You Being Targeted?

Scammers are constantly updating their strategies to align with global trends. This was highlighted by Shaheen Ali, the Permanent Secretary for the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications, during the launch of the first National Scam Awareness Week.

Mr. Ali emphasized the importance of recognizing scams as a regrettable reality of modern life, particularly in our fast-paced digital environment. He detailed various scams prevalent in Fiji, such as impersonation fraud, fake job postings, and romance scams, which are often intensified by misleading information on social media platforms.

He stated, “The National Scam Awareness Week serves as a crucial platform for educating not only young adults but also future generations on how to identify and safeguard themselves against scams.” To enhance outreach efforts, the initiative will utilize multiple media formats, including billboards and social media, to raise public awareness.

Seema Shandil, the chief executive officer of the Consumer Council of Fiji, pointed out that there has been a noticeable lack of engagement from consumers during outreach activities. However, interest peaks when individuals fall victim to scams.

“Despite our many warnings about the potential for scams and guidance on how to identify fraudsters, many consumers remain indifferent,” Ms. Shandil remarked. She noted that despite extensive campaigns aimed at raising awareness, people frequently disregard the advice given.

Tragically, this oversight frequently results in consumers seeking assistance only after they have already been scammed. Last year, the eBay Online Shop recruitment scam impacted 900 Fijians, with the council receiving complaints totaling $1.7 million.

“The repercussions of these scams are just the beginning of larger issues,” Ms. Shandil added.

On a global scale, online fraud has increased, with phishing emails and other deceptive tactics affecting both individuals and businesses. The Anti-Scam Taskforce has been established to strengthen cooperation among agencies, enhance awareness, and push for protective measures through initiatives like Scam Awareness Week.

The taskforce’s objective includes improving public education and conducting collaborative campaigns, along with advocating for tighter laws and regulations.
