Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Hon. Professor Biman Prasad emphasized the serious impact of drugs on individuals, families, and communities, calling it a national crisis that could have dire consequences for the nation if not addressed.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Gold N Water Carnival 2024 in Tavua, Professor Prasad highlighted the event’s theme: “Educating and Empowering the Wider Community to ‘Say No to Drugs,” which he described as both timely and significant.
He urged attendees to reject drugs and also speak out against violence towards women and children. The Minister pointed out that while the government has implemented a national strategy to combat drug use and trafficking, there will be increased focus on law enforcement and related agencies.
Professor Prasad expressed a strong message to the youth and those who might engage with drugs, urging them to refrain from such lifestyle choices, emphasizing that drug use not only harms individuals but also devastates families, productivity, and the social and economic structure of the nation.
He noted the global consequences of drug addiction and its destructive impact on countries, families, and individuals.
