Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the severe impact of drug abuse on individuals, families, and communities during his address at the conclusion of the Gold N Water Carnival 2024 in Tavua. He described drugs as a national scourge that could have devastating effects on the country if not actively rejected.
Reflecting on the carnival’s theme, “Educating and Empowering the Wider Community to ‘Say No to Drugs,’” Professor Prasad affirmed its relevance and importance. He urged attendees to reject drugs and also to oppose violence against women and children.
The Deputy Prime Minister highlighted the government’s commitment to addressing the issue through a national drug and narcotic strategy, with an added emphasis on strengthening the police force and various agencies involved in combatting drug-related problems.
He called upon young people and others who may encounter drug use or distribution to firmly say no to drugs, as their use threatens not only personal well-being but also the stability and productivity of families and the wider community. Professor Prasad warned that countries worldwide have suffered deep destruction due to drug abuse, particularly hard drugs, and he urged collective action to avoid a similar fate.
