Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance Professor Biman Prasad has addressed the serious issue of drug use, labeling it a national crisis that endangers individuals as well as entire communities and families. He emphasized the need to reject drug use, stating that failing to do so could lead to dire consequences for the country.
Speaking at the conclusion of the Gold N Water Carnival 2024 in Tavua, Professor Prasad highlighted the carnival’s theme, “Educating and Empowering the Wider Community to ‘Say No to Drugs,’” as particularly relevant and important.
He urged attendees to “say no to drugs; say no to violence against our women and children,” reiterating the government’s commitment to tackling these concerns through a national drug and narcotic strategy. He mentioned that there will be an increased emphasis on the police force and relevant agencies in this effort.
Professor Prasad appealed directly to the youth and anyone involved with drugs, asking them to refuse drug use. He warned that drug dependency not only leads to personal destruction but also adversely affects families, friends, and the broader social and economic fabric of the nation. He cited global examples where rampant drug issues, particularly concerning hard drugs, have devastated societies and families.
