Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Hon. Professor Biman Prasad, has emphasized that drug abuse is a significant national crisis that harms not only individuals but also families and communities. He warned that the consequences could be devastating for the nation if society does not collectively reject drug use.
During his speech at the conclusion of the Gold N Water Carnival 2024 in Tavua, Professor Prasad highlighted the event’s theme, “Educating and Empowering the Wider Community to ‘Say No to Drugs,’” calling it both timely and crucial.
He urged the public to “say no to drugs and say no to violence against our women and children.”
Professor Prasad mentioned that while the government has implemented a national drug and narcotic strategy, there is an increased emphasis on enhancing the capabilities of the police force and related agencies.
He addressed the youth and anyone who may have encountered drugs, urging them to refuse involvement. “Drugs will not only ruin your life but will also negatively impact your family, friends, and the economic and social structures of our nation,” he stated.
He concluded by noting that around the globe, the consequences of drug abuse, particularly with hard drugs, have led to the destruction of individuals, families, and entire communities.
