Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the issues surrounding the malfunctioning X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of service for over two months, after being only partially functional since last July. Pillay expressed concern that the local business community is prepared to assist in rectifying the situation, but action is needed from the ministry’s headquarters.
Patients have experienced inconvenience due to this equipment failure. One patient, Ilisapeci Bola, noted that she had to travel to Zens Medical Centre for her X-ray, highlighting the importance of the Savusavu hospital as a primary healthcare provider for people in the region, including those from the Prime Minister’s village.
Local businessman Aren Nunnink assessed the X-ray machine and determined it requires a software upgrade. He emphasized the urgency of making the medical equipment operational, particularly for emergency situations that could arise, such as accidents needing immediate X-ray services after hours. Nunnink has offered to fund the repairs, suggesting that a local engineer could complete the work quickly, but he faces communication challenges with the authorities. Despite his attempts to reach those in charge, he has been informed that relevant personnel are on leave.
An inquiry was sent to the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, but no response has been received. Meanwhile, the recent National Budget allocation includes $12 million for upgrades at various healthcare facilities, including Savusavu, as well as an additional $3.8 million for minor upgrades nationwide. However, the current issue with the X-ray machine remains unresolved.
While the situation is concerning, it reflects a community’s resolve and willingness to collaborate with authorities for better healthcare service delivery. There is hope that with increased awareness and shared urgency, the necessary repairs can be addressed promptly to enhance the hospital’s capabilities.
