Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, is urging the Ministry of Health to take action regarding a malfunctioning X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of service for over two months, causing inconvenience for both patients and healthcare providers. Mr. Pillay expressed his hope that the ministry’s headquarters would respond soon, as the local business community is ready to lend support.
Patients have been forced to seek imaging services elsewhere, with one individual, Ilisapeci Bola, noting the difficulties she faced in accessing necessary healthcare. The local hospital serves a large population, including residents from Cakaudrove and even the Prime Minister’s village, further emphasizing the importance of functional medical equipment in the region.
Local businessman Aren Nunnink examined the X-ray machine and determined that it requires a software upgrade. He highlighted the urgency of ensuring the machine is operational, especially in cases of emergencies such as car accidents that may happen outside regular hours. Mr. Nunnink has volunteered to cover the repair costs and has identified a local engineer who could resolve the issue quickly. However, attempts to communicate with health authorities have not met with success, as they have reportedly been unavailable.
An email inquiry sent to the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, on December 30, has yet to elicit a response. Meanwhile, in the National Budget for 2024-2025, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated $12 million for capital works at Labasa Hospital, which includes refurbishment and upgrades for various health facilities, including Savusavu. Additionally, $3.8 million was designated for minor upgrades across health services nationwide.
Despite these budget allocations, the situation regarding the X-ray machine in Savusavu remains unresolved, prompting ongoing concerns among community members about accessing urgent medical care.
Overall, this situation highlights the critical need for timely communication and responsive action from health authorities, especially in the face of urgent medical needs. The willingness of local business leaders to assist further underscores the community’s commitment to improving healthcare access, which resonates positively as a sign of solidarity and proactive involvement. With continued advocacy and collaboration, there is hope that the necessary repairs can be made swiftly, ensuring that residents can receive the healthcare they deserve.
