Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the long-standing issue of a non-functional X-ray machine at Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of service for over two months, despite being semi-functional since July of the previous year.

Pillay emphasized the readiness of the local business community to assist in resolving the issue, but pointed out that they are awaiting direction from the ministry. Patients have expressed frustration over the inconvenience this has caused. Ilisapeci Bola, a local resident, shared her experience of needing to travel to Zens Medical Centre for X-rays, highlighting that Savusavu hospital should have the necessary equipment to serve the community effectively.

Local businessman Aren Nunnink inspected the machine and identified that it requires a software upgrade. He raised concerns about the urgent need for functioning medical equipment, especially in cases of accidents. Nunnink has even expressed willingness to cover the repair costs, as he knows a local engineer capable of fixing the problem quickly.

Attempts to reach health authorities for updates have been met with delays, as Nunnink was informed that relevant officials were on annual leave. An email was sent to Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, on December 30, but no response has been received.

In the 2024-2025 National Budget, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated substantial funds for healthcare improvements, including $12 million for upgrades to Labasa Hospital and surrounding facilities. Unfortunately, despite these provisions, the X-ray machine in Savusavu continues to remain dysfunctional.

This situation highlights the critical need for timely communication and responsiveness within the healthcare sector. With continued advocacy from local businesses and community members, there is hope that the Ministry of Health will prioritize these urgent repairs, ensuring better healthcare services for the people of Cakaudrove.

Summary:
The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce is pressing the Ministry of Health to fix the X-ray machine at the local hospital, which has been out of order for over two months. Business owners are ready to help but are awaiting instruction. While the government has allocated funds for healthcare improvements, the machine’s repair remains unaddressed, stressing the need for prompt action to enhance medical services in the community.
