The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Avikash Pillay, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the prolonged issue with the non-functional X-ray machine at Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of order for over two months and was only semi-functional from July of the previous year.

Pillay emphasized the readiness of the local business community to offer assistance in resolving the issue, but he stated that clear instructions from the Ministry of Health are essential. Local resident Ilisapeci Bola shared her frustrations about having to travel to Zens Medical Centre for X-rays, underscoring the importance of having a functioning hospital in the region, which serves not just Savusavu but also the wider Cakaudrove area, including the Prime Minister’s village.

A local businessman, Aren Nunnink, inspected the X-ray machine and determined that it merely requires a software update to become operational again. He expressed concern over the potential consequences of the machine’s failure, especially in emergencies, such as car accidents. Nunnink is willing to cover the costs for repairs, noting that a local engineer could fix the machine in just half an hour. Despite his efforts to contact the relevant authorities, he has faced difficulties, as some officials are reportedly on annual leave.

An inquiry was made to the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services on December 30, but no response has been received thus far. In the recent 2024-2025 National Budget, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated $12 million for improvements at Labasa Hospital and other health facilities, including the refurbishment of the Savusavu health facility. However, the persistent issue with the X-ray machine remains unaddressed.

This situation highlights a critical gap in healthcare services that affects many residents in the region. The community’s willingness to actively participate in repairs illustrates a spirit of collaboration and a desire for improved health services. It is hoped that the Ministry of Health will take swift action to resolve this issue and restore the essential medical services that local residents rely upon.

In times of hardship, it is the unified efforts of the community and business leaders that can lead to positive change, reminding us of the importance of cooperation in addressing public health challenges.
