Savusavu’s New Commercial Hub Set to Transform Local Economy

Additional commercial space has been designated in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, aimed at fostering economic development.

Last Friday, Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, inaugurated a 1.14-hectare commercial site in Qaraniqatio, Savusavu.

This site will provide essential commercial space and is expected to generate jobs, stimulate local enterprises, and improve the economic landscape of Savusavu. The area will comprise nine or ten commercial blocks along with parking facilities, with an estimated job creation of 15 positions per block, leading to around 150 new jobs within the town.

Mr. Vosarogo noted that this initiative would encourage employment locally instead of forcing residents to seek work in Australia, New Zealand, or Suva. He emphasized the significance of collaboration between public and private sectors in creating a sustainable platform for growth in these regions.

He remarked on the stagnation experienced over the past decade, urging support for local businesses and investors to seize available opportunities. He pointed out that development requires proper infrastructure as a foundational element before any progress can be realized.

Mr. Vosarogo expressed gratitude to Land Planning, Surveying, and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji for leading the project. He affirmed the government’s commitment to fostering development in the northern region.

Sanya Dayal, director of the consultancy, mentioned that the partnership has ensured thorough feasibility studies, aiming for sustainable development and the establishment of a vibrant commercial hub in the future. He also noted that the project’s second phase would involve enhancements to the energy grid, water supply, and road infrastructure for the commercial lots.
