The president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, Avikash Pillay, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the long-standing issue of the non-operational X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. Mr. Pillay expressed concern that the machine has been inoperative for more than two months, following a semi-functional period since July.
He highlighted the readiness of the local business community to assist, but emphasized the need for direction from the ministry’s headquarters. Patient Ilisapeci Bola shared her experience of being directed to Zens Medical Centre for X-rays, despite the hospital being the main health facility serving residents of Cakaudrove, including the area of the Prime Minister’s village.
Local businessman Aren Nunnink inspected the X-ray machine and identified that a software upgrade could restore its functionality. He expressed the urgency of having such medical equipment operational, particularly in emergency situations, such as car accidents requiring immediate X-ray assessments.
Mr. Nunnink has volunteered to finance the repairs, which could be completed quickly by a local engineer. Despite attempts to communicate with authorities, he has faced delays, stating that those in charge were unreachable due to annual leave.
An email seeking an update from the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, sent on December 30 has yet to receive a response. Meanwhile, the 2024-2025 National Budget has allocated significant funds for health facility upgrades across the region, including the Savusavu health facility, but the X-ray machine’s issue remains unresolved.
This situation highlights the critical need for effective communication and quick action within healthcare management to ensure that essential services are maintained for community welfare. The willingness of local businesses to assist indicates a strong community spirit and a desire to collaborate for the betterment of public health services. With the upcoming improvements outlined in the budget, there is hope that these challenges will soon be addressed.
