Savusavu’s Health Crisis: Defunct X-Ray Machine Leaves Patients in Limbo

Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, expressed urgent concern about the malfunctioning X-ray machine at Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. He emphasized that the Ministry of Health has not taken action regarding the machine, which has been completely inoperable for over two months.

Pillay noted that the business community is willing to assist but requires guidance from the ministry. The issues began when the X-ray machine was only semi-functional from July before it broke down entirely in October of last year. Patients are now required to travel to Zens Medical Centre in Savusavu for their X-rays, causing inconvenience, particularly for those from remote areas.

Local businessman Aren Nunnink investigated the equipment and discovered that the X-ray machine only needs a software upgrade. He highlighted the critical nature of the service, especially in emergencies, questioning how the hospital would handle urgent cases if the X-ray service is unavailable after hours.

Nunnink expressed his willingness to pay for repairs and stated that a local engineer could fix the machine in a mere 30 minutes. However, he faces challenges with communication to the authorities, as he was informed they were on annual leave. Nunnink, alongside other local businesspeople, is eager to help but faces roadblocks in coordination with the ministry.

An email was sent to Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, on December 30 for an update but has yet to receive a response. Meanwhile, in the 2024-2025 National Budget, Finance Minister Biman Prasad allocated $12 million for capital works at Labasa Hospital and other health facilities, which includes provisions for upgrading the Savusavu health facility and building a new rehabilitation center in Tamavua. However, the issue of the X-ray machine remains unresolved.

This situation underscores the critical need for timely repairs and upgrades in health facilities, particularly in regions that rely heavily on them. It is hopeful that the collaboration of local business leaders and the support promised in the national budget will ultimately lead to improvements in healthcare services in Savusavu. Prompt action by the Ministry of Health may enhance public trust and ensure the community has access to essential medical services.
