Savusavu, Vanua Levu, is set to receive an expansion in commercial space, aimed at fostering economic growth in the region. The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, inaugurated a 1.14-hectare commercial lot at Qaraniqatio in Savusavu last Friday.
This newly designated area is expected to not only meet the demand for commercial space but also create employment opportunities, invigorate local businesses, and enhance the economic environment of Savusavu overall. The state land will comprise nine or ten commercial blocks, along with parking facilities, with an estimate that each commercial block could generate around 15 jobs.
Mr. Vosarogo indicated that approximately 150 new jobs will be created within this space, providing local employment opportunities instead of pushing residents to seek work abroad in countries like Australia, New Zealand, or even in Suva.
He emphasized the significance of collaborative efforts between public and private sectors, stating, “This project illustrates the power of public and private partnership, combining state initiatives with private sector contributions to create a viable growth platform for local towns.”
Reflecting on the past decade, he noted a lack of progress among various stakeholders and stressed the necessity of supporting local businesses and investors in seizing development opportunities.
Mr. Vosarogo acknowledged that infrastructure development is a prerequisite for growth. He expressed gratitude to Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji for its pivotal role in this project.
“It is an honor to be part of the Government’s efforts to facilitate development in the North,” he remarked. Sanya Dayal, director of Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji, stated that the partnership allowed for comprehensive feasibility studies that align with sustainable development goals, aiming to establish a robust commercial hub in the region. He also mentioned that phase two of the project would focus on enhancements to the Energy Fiji Limited grid, as well as improvements to water and road access for the commercial lots.
