A new commercial space has been established in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, to foster economic growth. Filimoni Vosarogo, the Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, inaugurated a 1.14-hectare commercial lot at Qaraniqatio in Savusavu last Friday.
This newly developed lot aims to not only address the demand for commercial space but also to generate jobs, encourage local businesses, and enhance the overall economic atmosphere of Savusavu. The state land will feature nine or ten commercial blocks along with designated parking, with an expectation to create around 15 jobs per block.
Mr. Vosarogo estimated that approximately 150 individuals would gain employment within this new area of Savusavu Town, encouraging locals to work closer to home rather than seeking opportunities abroad in places like Australia, New Zealand, or even the capital city, Suva.
He emphasized the significance of collaboration between the public and private sectors in establishing a solid foundation for growth in local communities. Reflecting on previous decades, he noted the stagnation among various stakeholders and stressed the need for supporting local businesses and investors while maximizing available opportunities.
“Development does not always materialize without preparation; essential infrastructure must come first,” he stated. The Minister acknowledged the contributions of Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji for their pivotal role in the project.
Mr. Vosarogo expressed pride in being part of the government and their commitment to bringing development to the northern regions. Sanya Dayal, director of the consulting firm, indicated that through this partnership, feasibility studies were conducted to ensure sustainable development goals are met, paving the way for a thriving commercial hub in the future. He also mentioned that the second phase of the project would involve improvements to the Energy Fiji Limited grid, water supply, and road infrastructure for the commercial lots.
