Avikash Pillay, the president of the Savusavu Chamber of Commerce and Industries, is urging the Ministry of Health to address the long-standing issue of the broken X-ray machine at the Savusavu sub-divisional hospital. The machine has been out of service for over two months, with its semi-functional status starting back in July. Local residents, including patients like Ilisapeci Bola, have expressed their frustration at needing to travel to private medical facilities to get X-rays, as the local hospital serves a vital role in the community, including the surrounding areas of Cakaudrove.

Local businessman Aren Nunnink has identified that the modern X-ray machine requires a software upgrade and has offered to cover the costs for the necessary repairs himself. He emphasized the urgent need for this medical equipment to be operational, especially in emergencies, as delays could significantly impact patient care.

Despite reaching out to health authorities, Nunnink reported receiving no response, claiming that those responsible for communicating on the matter were unavailable. An email seeking an update on the situation was sent to Dr. Jemesa Tudravu, the Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, but no reply has been forthcoming.

The recent 2024-2025 National Budget, announced by Finance Minister Biman Prasad, included allocations amounting to $12 million for various health facility upgrades, including renovations at the Savusavu hospital and a new rehabilitation center in Tamavua. However, the unresolved status of the X-ray machine highlights a gap between funding, communication, and the urgent healthcare needs of the community.

This situation underscores the importance of timely maintenance and upgrades within healthcare facilities, and the willingness of local businesses to help shows a community that cares deeply about its healthcare services. It is hoped that the Ministry will respond promptly to alleviate the concerns of the residents and restore essential medical services in Savusavu.
