Additional commercial space has been designated in Savusavu, Vanua Levu, to enhance economic growth. The Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources, Filimoni Vosarogo, unveiled a 1.14-hectare commercial lot at Qaraniqatio in Savusavu last Friday.
This new lot is expected to create essential commercial opportunities, generate jobs, and invigorate local businesses, ultimately improving the economic framework of Savusavu. The development will feature nine or ten commercial blocks along with parking facilities, and it is anticipated that each block could generate around 15 jobs. According to Mr. Vosarogo, approximately 150 jobs will be created within this area, providing opportunities for locals rather than seeking employment abroad in places like Australia and New Zealand or even in Suva.
Mr. Vosarogo emphasized the significance of public-private partnerships, noting that collaboration between the government and private sector is crucial for facilitating growth in towns. He pointed out that there has been limited progress among various stakeholders over the past decade and highlighted the need to support local initiatives and investments.
He acknowledged that development relies heavily on establishing the proper infrastructure first. Mr. Vosarogo expressed gratitude to Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji for their leadership in this project and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to advancing development in the Northern region.
Sanya Dayal, director of Land Planning, Surveying and Engineering Consultants Pte Limited Fiji, mentioned that through this partnership, feasibility studies have been conducted to ensure sustainable development and establish a dynamic commercial center. He also indicated that the next phase of the project will involve improvements to the Energy Fiji Limited grid, as well as enhancements to water and road infrastructure for the commercial lots.
