NaVualiku, the ‘Fiji Tourism Development Programme in Vanua Levu,’ officially opened its office in Savusavu Town last Saturday. Located in the JKS Building, the inauguration was led by Minister for Tourism and Civil Aviation, Viliame Gavoka, as the programme falls under his ministry’s oversight.
“This office symbolizes much more than just a new facility. It establishes our presence in the very location where this project aims to create an impact, develop strategies, mobilize resources, and lay the groundwork for sustainable development,” stated Mr. Gavoka. He emphasized that the ministry’s goal is not only to attract more tourists to Vanua Levu but also to enhance the livelihoods of its residents. “The office will be crucial in ensuring that the benefits of the NaVualiku programme reach every community on the island,” he added.
The project, funded by the World Bank with a US$200 million financing package, is set to be implemented in three phases over the next ten years as part of a multi-phase programmatic strategy. Stefano Mocci, the World Bank Group country manager for Fiji, remarked that the organization, along with key partners and stakeholders, is dedicated to assisting the Government of Fiji in its efforts to transform Vanua Levu into a vibrant tourism center, which will create jobs, particularly for women and youth, attract both local and international investments, and stimulate economic growth to enhance the quality of life for residents.
“In addition to financing, we are also contributing our global and regional expertise and knowledge to support the implementation of this project,” said Mr. Mocci. He highlighted that the new office is a vital part of the forthcoming initiatives to accelerate results on the ground, improve coordination and collaboration, and strengthen partnerships in the North. He expressed pride in supporting Fiji’s development priorities under its ‘Look North’ policy aimed at boosting the tourism sector in Vanua Levu.
