Savusavu Airport Road Crisis: Is Infrastructure Being Neglected?

Ketan Lal, an Opposition Member of Parliament, has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road adjacent to Savusavu Airport. Originally from the area, Lal noted that this vital roadway has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel by road authorities, leading to a rise in accidents and excessive dust that impacts both drivers and local residents.

He emphasized that this situation not only underscores neglect in infrastructure but also brings into question the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. Lal stated, “Savusavu is a bustling tourism hub that attracts visitors from all over the globe who wish to experience its unique beauty and charm. The airport is one of only two airstrips that provide air travel to the island. The condition of the road leading to this gateway is not merely a local concern; it is a national issue.”

According to Lal, having a smooth, safe, and dependable road is crucial to supporting the tourism industry, which is essential to the economy and provides jobs for many Fijians. He pointed out the severe consequences of the road’s transformation into gravel, noting that the increase in accidents poses a significant safety threat, while the dust created by passing vehicles is both a health risk and a disturbance for nearby residents.

“This situation is not just an inconvenience; it represents a clear failure to provide safe and reliable infrastructure, which is a fundamental responsibility of any government,” Lal said. He is calling for answers from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and questioned whether they have the necessary funds to maintain the roads effectively.

He criticized the financial choices made by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, suggesting that funds used for extravagant dinners could have been better spent on resealing this crucial road, thus benefiting the community instead of indulging in temporary luxury.

Lal further argued that this scenario reflects poor priorities and a lack of accountability. “The Government’s duty is to serve the populace, ensuring their safety and well-being. When essential infrastructure like roads is ignored, it indicates a disregard for these responsibilities.”

He urged the government to urgently address the issue by allocating the necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the resealing of the road alongside Savusavu Airport. Lal emphasized that resolving this matter goes beyond merely fixing a road; it is about restoring trust in leadership and showing a commitment to the welfare of all Fijians.
