Savusavu Airport Road Crisis: A Call for Action on Infrastructure Neglect

Opposition MP Ketan Lal has expressed serious concerns regarding the poor condition of the road near Savusavu Airport. Lal, a local resident, noted that this vital road has been downgraded from a tar-sealed surface to gravel, which has led to a rise in accidents and severe dust issues affecting both drivers and neighboring residents.

He emphasized that this situation underscores a larger issue of infrastructure neglect and questions the priorities and financial management of the Coalition Government. Lal stated, “Savusavu is a vibrant tourism hub, attracting visitors from around the globe who come to enjoy its unique beauty and charm. The airport is one of only two airstrips facilitating passenger travel to the island. The condition of the road leading to this important gateway is not just a local concern; it is a national issue.”

He highlighted the necessity of having a smooth, safe, and dependable road to bolster the tourism industry, which plays a crucial role in the economy and supports many livelihoods in Fiji. Lal pointed out that the transformation of the road to gravel has led to severe consequences, including increased safety risks and health hazards due to dust emissions from vehicles.

“This is not just an inconvenience; it signifies a failure to provide essential infrastructure, which is a fundamental responsibility of any government,” he remarked. Lal is demanding accountability from the Fiji Roads Authority regarding this decision and is questioning whether they have adequate funding for proper road maintenance.

He suggested that the funds spent by Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka on a lavish dinner could have been better directed towards resurfacing this critical road, which would benefit the community instead of serving temporary indulgences.

“This predicament reflects misplaced priorities and a lack of accountability. The government’s role is to serve the people and ensure their safety and welfare. Neglecting critical infrastructure such as roads showcases a disregard for these duties,” Lal asserted.

He called on the government to promptly address this issue by allocating the necessary funds to the Fiji Roads Authority for the road’s resealing. “Fixing this road is not just about infrastructure; it is about rebuilding trust in our leadership and showing a genuine commitment to the well-being of all Fijians,” Lal added.
