Savoring Change: Fiji’s First Cook-Off to Spice Up Street Food

In Fiji, food is a cherished aspect of life, celebrated for its rich diversity and a blend of flavors influenced by various cultures. With today’s fast-paced lifestyle, residents often look for quick, healthy, and satisfying meal options. When cooking at home is not feasible, many turn to restaurants or street food vendors for convenience.

A common sight on Fiji’s streets is the prevalence of barbecue street food. This raises an interesting question: why is barbecue so predominant compared to other traditional dishes or meals made with local ingredients?

To inspire street food vendors and broaden their offerings, the Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprise (MSME) Council, part of the Fiji Commerce and Employers Federation (FCEF), is organizing the inaugural Cook-Off on September 27.

Set to take place at Paradiso Restaurant, the event will feature 12 selected participants who run food businesses, operate cloud kitchens, or sell food from home. The primary goal is to promote the creation of healthy, quick street foods that go beyond the typical barbecue options.

“We want the people of Fiji to recognize that there is more to street food than just barbecue, whether during the day or night. We encourage the creation of a variety of quick, easy meals that can be enjoyed on the streets,” stated Watesoni Nata, chair of the MSME Council.

As non-communicable diseases (NCDs) continue to rise, it is vital to advocate for healthier lifestyle choices. Fiji boasts an abundance of fruits and vegetables, ripe for incorporation into nutritious street food alternatives.

The Cook-Off was officially announced on August 16 at the FCEF, with 300 tickets available for purchase at $30 through Ticket Max. The competition is open to food enthusiasts, including those in the food business and students aspiring to enter the industry.

From the 12 contestants, three winners will be selected by a panel, with prizes of $3,000 for first place, $2,000 for second, and $1,500 for third, along with a one-year membership with the MSME Council.

Philippe Garand, an experienced chef with international experience, will serve as one of the main judges for the Cook-Off. Mr. Garand is enthusiastic about promoting local, traditional street food made from local produce.

“It has to be more than just barbecue. We have so many options, and we want people in Fiji to realize that,” he expressed. He emphasized the need for skills, creativity, and the use of local produce to create delicious, quick meals.

The MSME sector is vital to Fiji’s economy, often consisting of family-run or individually managed businesses. The FCEF is committed to elevating the voices and needs of MSMEs while recognizing their contributions.

FCEF supports the MSME Council’s initiative and encourages food vendors to participate in the upcoming Cook-Off. This event aims not only to celebrate the culinary talents of MSMEs but also to foster lasting relationships and growth opportunities.

The FCEF and the MSME Council appreciate the support from various organizations, including the Fiji Development Bank, the Ministry of Trade, and many others, as they look forward to the event.
