Salary Showdown: Will CETWUF Get the Raise They’ve Been Waiting For?

Discussions aimed at informal mediation involving the Construction Energy, Timber, Workers Union of Fiji (CETWUF), the Fiji Roads Authority, and the Minister for Employment, Productivity and Workplace Relations indicate progress towards a potential agreement, according to union general secretary John Paul.

On September 3, the union outlined its demands for a salary increase for members, emphasizing the need for cost-of-living adjustments that have not been implemented since 2017.

Paul noted that during the informal meeting, employers were given time to consult with their line minister and are expected to return to the union next week with updates. He clarified that there is currently no strike action, as discussions are ongoing.

A mediator from the Ministry of Employment, along with representatives from the Fiji Roads Authority, participated in the meeting. While Paul described the discussions as positive, he mentioned that concrete outcomes will not be known until the next meeting.

A follow-up session is scheduled for next week, during which FRA representatives are expected to communicate their position to the union.

The Building and Wood Workers International (BWI) issued a statement acknowledging the deadlock in negotiations. As an affiliate of the BWI, CETWUF has raised concerns regarding individual contracts and the lack of salary adjustments.

BWI Asia Pacific Regional Representative Apolinar Tolentino expressed concern about this situation, particularly given that workers have not received a cost-of-living adjustment since 2017. He emphasized the importance of establishing a salary structure and performance management system as vital for employee welfare and the efficient functioning of an organization managing public funds.

The BWI reaffirmed its support for CETWUF in seeking to improve working conditions for FRA employees through agreements that align with the standards of the International Labour Organization (ILO), which the Fiji government has endorsed.

Efforts to contact Minister Agni Deo Singh and Fiji Roads Authority Board chair Atunaisa Nayago were unsuccessful, as multiple calls went unanswered.
