Sailing Towards Unity: Uto Ni Yalo’s Historic Voyage to Tonga

The crew aboard the Uto ni Yalo celebrated as they set off on a historic voyage to Tonga for the 53rd Pacific Island Forum Leaders Meeting (PIFLM53). This marks the vessel’s return to international waters after nearly ten years, with a mission to convey a message of peace, prosperity, and resilience for Pacific communities.

The journey is expected to last between five to seven days and includes both veteran and new crew members taking part. Seth Hortsmeyer, program director of Oceans Five, expressed excitement about their collaboration with local NGOs to promote ocean conservation. He emphasized the significance of integrating traditional knowledge into conservation efforts, calling for greater involvement from traditional communities and Pacific Islanders in ocean stewardship.

“Oceans Five has a delegation attending the PIFLM53, and we were thrilled at the opportunity for the Uto ni Yalo to make this journey,” said Mr. Hortsmeyer.

The “Sautu Voyage” serves as a beacon of Pacific unity and prosperity, following the ancient routes long navigated by Pacific leaders, while highlighting the vital role of traditional knowledge in tackling contemporary environmental issues.
