Sailing to Unity: Woman Leads ‘Uto ni Yalo’ Crew to Tonga

After a seven-day voyage, the 16-member crew of the ‘Uto ni Yalo’ reached Nuku’alofa, Tonga, on Sunday, perfectly timed for the start of the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum Meeting on Monday. The ‘Uto ni Yalo’ represents a united region, reflecting its strong connection to the ocean and traditional seafaring practices.

The journey was particularly significant as Iva Vunikura, a woman, served as the sail master, a role typically held by experienced male crew members. Vunikura has been sailing on the ‘Uto ni Yalo’ for 12 years and has completed her longest voyage of over 80,000 nautical miles, traveling from Fiji to Mexico. She has also explored various locations throughout the region.

Reflecting on their challenging journey, Vunikura stated, “It was tough because we were coming into the wind, but we didn’t give up, which is why we are here today (Monday).” The sailor from Vione, Gau, was among three women on the ship. She is passionate about her role and finds peace in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
