Michael Dhal had a promising start in the first round of the Hobie Cat race at the 2024 Musket Cove Fiji Regatta held yesterday. For Dhal, the emphasis was less on winning and more on enjoying the positive atmosphere. As a return participant, he recognized that the event is about camaraderie, sailing, and having fun.

“It’s always just a big party. Everyone comes to enjoy themselves, have a few beers, and not take things too seriously,” Dhal noted. Although the competition was serious, Dhal maintained that the races were not his sole focus.

“If you lose, you just enjoy your day,” he remarked with a smile. Before the races commenced, he took some time to surf, relishing the waves. This combination of competition and leisure is what Dhal cherishes most about the event.

Thursday was designated “Pirate Day,” a large-scale celebration where both competitors and spectators engaged in festivities throughout the day. “Everyone partied all day,” Dhal added.

Dhal’s racing partner this year was a young German sailor. “It’s nice to get him used to it,” he explained, emphasizing the importance of mentoring the young participant and making the most of the experience.

When asked about their potential success in the competition, Dhal humorously suggested, “It depends on how many beers I have, I guess.” The Hobie Cat competition represented more than just racing for him; it was about the overall experience.

“It’s a great day. Everyone just enjoys themselves. I think everyone’s a little bit dusty from yesterday, but it’s definitely a beautiful day. Look at this place, it’s magical,” he expressed. For Dhal, the event is not solely about sailing but also about the joy, connections with others, and the vibrant atmosphere. In his view, every participant is a winner just by being part of the experience.
