Sailing Against the Wind: A Pioneering Journey in the Pacific

After a seven-day journey, the 16-member crew of ‘Uto ni Yalo’ arrived in Nuku’alofa, Tonga, on Sunday, just in time for the beginning of the Pacific Islands Leaders Forum Meeting on Monday. The ‘Uto ni Yalo’ represents a united region, deeply connected to its maritime heritage and traditional seafaring capabilities.

This voyage was particularly noteworthy as a woman took on the role of sail master, a position typically held by male sailors. Iva Vunikura, who has been with ‘Uto ni Yalo’ for 12 years, has an impressive sailing record, covering over 80,000 nautical miles from Fiji to Mexico and extensively navigating the surrounding region.

Reflecting on the challenging journey, Vunikura stated, “It was tough because we were coming into the wind, but we didn’t give up, which is why we are here today (Monday).” Hailing from Vione, Gau, Vunikura was one of three women on board the vessel. She is passionate about her role and finds peace in the vastness of the Pacific Ocean.
