The Land Transport Authority (LTA) has emphasized the importance of road safety following a tragic accident that resulted in the death of 26-year-old Ravneel Lal on Sunday along Valley Rd, Sigatoka. Lal was one of four passengers in a vehicle that lost control and rolled over near Navula.

LTA’s chief executive officer, Irimaia Rokosawa, highlighted this incident as a critical reminder of the potential for road fatalities to occur anywhere, often due to preventable factors when safety measures are ignored. He pointed out that behaviors such as speeding, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic rules are avoidable actions that frequently lead to tragic outcomes, an issue that has become increasingly prevalent.

As we enter the festive season, Mr. Rokosawa stressed that there is no justification for neglecting road safety. He encouraged everyone to celebrate responsibly, taking care not to jeopardize their lives or those of others. In light of recent events, the LTA plans to enhance collaborative enforcement initiatives with the Fiji Police Force, focusing on areas that experience frequent accidents and inner routes known for their danger.

Mr. Rokosawa urged drivers to observe speed limits, minimize distractions, and ensure all passengers buckle up. He called for a collective reflection on road user behavior, asserting that the unfortunate incident serves as a crucial wake-up call for everyone in Fiji to commit to safer road practices.

This call to action not only serves to prevent further tragedies but also promotes community responsibility for the safety of all road users. By taking these proactive measures and fostering a culture of safety, we can work towards reducing road accidents and ensuring everyone reaches their destinations safely.

In summary, the LTA’s message is clear: prioritize road safety, be responsible, and protect not just yourself, but also those who share the road with you.
