The Ministry of Trade, Cooperatives, Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises and Communications is actively conducting safety inspections of fireworks at major retail centers. This initiative, led by the Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards, comes as the country approaches the Diwali celebrations, a time when fireworks are commonly used for personal, traditional, and religious festivities.

In a recent media statement, the ministry highlighted the importance of adhering to consumer fireworks regulations, particularly the selective ban on certain dangerous fireworks. This restriction aims to minimize risks related to accidents, injuries, and property damage, while still allowing the public to enjoy safe fireworks in a responsible manner.

Retailers must obtain appropriate licenses from the Mineral Resources Department to legally store and sell fireworks. The ministry notes that fireworks are categorized as explosive substances under the Explosives Act, with prohibited items such as shells, firecrackers, aerial wheels, and mines presenting significant dangers if handled improperly.

The ministry warns that traders found violating fireworks regulations could face severe consequences, including fines of up to $25,000 and possible on-the-spot fines of $2,000. Additionally, it is advised that children under 18 should not handle fireworks, while older children may only use them with close adult supervision.

Inspections will continue throughout the festive season, with a recent check revealing that out of 185 retailers, 85 hold the necessary licenses. However, the ministry also recorded two cases of non-compliance.

As the festive season unfolds, it is hopeful that these measures will contribute to a safe and enjoyable celebration for all involved, ensuring that fireworks can be enjoyed without compromising safety.

In summary, the ministry’s inspections and regulations aim to promote safe practices during the Diwali festivities, highlighting the importance of compliance among retailers and responsible use among consumers. The vision is to strike a balance between joyous celebration and public safety, fostering a safe environment for all.
