Ferry passengers are being encouraged to report any defects they observe on vessels, which may endanger their safety. This initiative comes from the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF) CEO, Joeli Cawaki, amid ongoing worries regarding the maintenance of certain ships.

Cawaki emphasized the crucial need for passengers to promptly communicate any defects directly to MSAF. This allows vessel operators to rapidly address identified issues, thus ensuring public safety, especially during the upcoming festive season, which typically sees increased travel traffic. He stated, “Passengers pay fares with the expectation of quality service. Their safety remains paramount.”

He also mentioned that vessels with a history of defects would be under heightened scrutiny during this busy period. Cawaki reiterated that each vessel should possess a safe ship management system, with crew members prioritizing public safety at all times.

Responding to concerns about breaches in passenger capacity, Cawaki assured that such vessels would be halted to assess the situation. “We must understand why the breach occurred and take steps to address it before the vessel resumes operations,” he explained.

Recognizing the expenses related to ship maintenance, Cawaki urged operators to conduct routine, timely maintenance checks to prevent significant issues from arising. He also called upon passengers to voice concerns over substandard seating or unclean conditions, which have frequently been reported on social media.

The MSAF is dedicated to overseeing vessel hygiene and enforcing compliance with safety standards, aiming to provide a safe and comfortable travel experience for all passengers. Additionally, Cawaki reminded operators of the importance of sticking to shipping schedules for timely operations.

In light of these efforts, there is a hopeful sentiment that with increased awareness and communication, ferry travel can become safer and more pleasant for everyone involved. By working collaboratively, both passengers and operators can contribute to a more secure and enjoyable maritime experience.
