Rural to Urban Drift: A Sports Dilemma in Fiji

Youths migrating from rural areas to urban centers pose a significant challenge to the development of grassroots sports in Fiji, according to Peter Mazey, executive chairman of the Fiji National Sports Commission. In his oral submission to Parliament regarding the Commission’s annual report for August 2022 to July 2023, Mazey highlighted that many rural community sporting associations established for local youth are losing their members as they leave for urban opportunities or professional sports abroad.

Mazey emphasized that this ongoing trend leaves these associations struggling to maintain their programs. He noted, “We set up an association in a community or islands only to find that the youths have all left by the time we return.” This trend is troubling not only for local sports development but also for Fiji’s competitive edge, as talented youths often seek professional opportunities overseas in various sports, including rugby and soccer.

He stated, “With sports evolving professionally, we are rapidly losing our athletes,” referring to the increasing number of young Fijians accepting contracts in foreign leagues, including soccer opportunities in New Zealand, Vanuatu, and Papua New Guinea.

To address these obstacles, the Fiji National Sports Commission is actively working to integrate rural sporting communities into urban programs to retain youth engagement in sports. This initiative aims to provide a sense of belonging and opportunity for young athletes to remain connected to their roots while also gaining exposure to broader sporting landscapes.

The significance of sports as a constructive outlet for youth cannot be overstated. Similar sentiments were echoed recently by Cricket Fiji chairman Meli Saubulinayau, who underscored the importance of cricket in keeping young people engaged and steering them away from illegal activities. Such initiatives not only help cultivate sports talent but also foster community bonds and promote healthier lifestyles among the youth.

The continuing efforts of the Fiji National Sports Commission, alongside other sporting bodies, foster a hopeful outlook for the future of sports in Fiji. By focusing on nurturing local talent and expanding opportunities within urban environments, there is considerable potential to enhance Fiji’s sporting scene, build community spirit, and create pathways for young athletes to shine both locally and internationally.
