Rupeni Kabu, a promising 27-year-old rugby player, has set his sights on being part of the HSBC SVNS series in 2025. Kabu aspires to earn a spot on head coach Osea Kolinisau’s 13-man team for one of the tournaments scheduled for next year.
Kabu made his series debut at the recent 2023 Dubai Sevens, following impressive performances in the Oceania and Pacific Games earlier that year. He expressed that being included in the wider squad is already a significant accomplishment for him. “It’s every young rugby player’s dream to be here – to play among the best players on the national side, and I hope I get another chance in one of the legs,” he shared.
In addition to his aspirations for the national team, Kabu aims to secure an overseas contract as part of his career progression. His rugby journey began with the Natakali Sharks, a team from Naiborebore, Tailevu, before moving on to Northland in the Vodafone Vanua championship, where he also played for the Police Blues sevens side.
Kabu has expressed gratitude for the mentorship he has received from experienced players in the squad such as Sevuloni Mocenacagi, Suliano Volivolituevei, and Waisea Nacuqu. He also shares admiration for assistant coach Viliame Satala, who has played a vital role in his development as a player. “I have learnt a lot from the seasoned players especially on discipline and I would like to follow in their footsteps to also inspire the next generation,” Kabu noted.
The national sevens squad is currently in training as they prepare for the McDonalds Fiji Coral Coast Sevens, which will take place from January 16-18 at Lawaqa Park in Sigatoka. Coach Kolinisau plans to select his team for the Perth Sevens, set for January 24-26.
It’s exciting to see athletes like Kabu dedicated to their craft, and his aspirations highlight the hope and ambition inherent in sports. The commitment to personal growth and inspiring others is a testament to the positive influence of sports in building a strong, supportive community. With the kick-off of these events approaching, fans can look forward to a thrilling rugby season ahead.
